A fife and drum corps is a musical ensemble consisting of fifes and drums. In the United States of America, fife and drum corps specializing in colonial period impressions using fifes, rope tension snare drums, and (sometimes) rope tension bass drums are known as Ancient Fife and Drum Corps. [1]

The preferred drum for the musicians was the rope-tensioned snare drum, with the rope used to put tension on the drumheads and snares (also known as the lengths of goat intestine) on the underside to brighten the sound and ensure it was heard across the battlefield.
